Heating 'Exam War'

Japanese

Although the "Standardization Policy" was adopted, a heated educational phenomenon called 'Exam War' is still going on. These are some of the stories on entrance examinations.

Though prestigious schools disappeared in junior high and high schools, there are in colleges. The top 3 universities in Korea are Seoul Univ, Yonsei Univ, and KORYO Univ. IFA Univ. is well known as a women's college.

There are charms and spells in any country. Let's look at some charms in Korea.

"Don't have a seaweed soup for breakfast on the day of exam." This is because seaweed have a meaning to slip on something. On the contrary, rice cakes and hard glutinous starch syrups are good.

These rice cakes and syrups are not only for eating, but there could be some parents who come to the college on the day of exam and stick it to the school gate. In Korea, rice cakes and starch syrups are a kind of a symbol for students taking exams, and it is like a custom that juniors in school give examinees these things 100 days before the exam.

Besides rice cakes and syrups, it is customary to drink 'a hundred-day' liquor 100 days before the exam. Moreover, some people give examinees 'exam-taking-rings'(!!) and forks. Giving forks signifies "please 'fork' objective questions."
