Travel in Sri Lanka

By Train
Railway travel is comparatively cheap. Sleeping cars are available on journeys to more distant parts of the island. These should be booked in advance. Total of railroad in Sri Lanka in 1993 is 1,491 km. No electric rail service available in Sri Lanka.

Train services are reliable and the intercity expresses between cities are recommended. There are usually second and third class tickets available, and a limited number of services with first class tickets. Inquiries on details of train times and booking can be made from the Fort Railway Station, tel. 435838 or 421281.

Train fares are very reasonable. The 71-mile (116-km) journey from Colombo to Kandy on the intercity costs Rs 60 while a third class ticket on a normal train costs only half that price.
