About in the center of Fukuyama city, located at the Ashina river, the Myoouin, built in 807,
is said to have been founded by Koubou-Daishi (grand master Koubou; a famous priest).
The main building is held in pure Japanese style, while some of the fine works employ
Chinese style of the T'ang period. This is the oldest existing structure held in this style
in Japan.
The five-storied pagoda is the fifth oldest pagoda designated national treasure. Both the
pagoda and the main building have been designated national treasures.
