Itsukushima Shrine
This shrine a designated national treasure, was built in the architectural style of the Heian period in 593. Later, in 1168, it was rebuild in its current beautiful form: "Shinden Zukuri" style with vermilion painted pillars carrying a majestic roof thatched with a cover of Japanese cypress. When the tide rises and fills the inlet, it almost looks as if the temple floats on the water - an impressive appearance. Many traditional rites are performed here.
Currently, steps are being taken to make this building a world cultural heritage.
