Hiroshima has also been called "carp region". The local professional baseball team is called
the "Hiroshima Eastern Sea Carps" and this is only one example of the close relationship
between Hiroshima and the deep green fish.
In particular the culture of the colored carp flourished in Saeki and is maybe second best
known after the place of its origin Niigata. In western Japan this is basis for the shipments
and recently it is even exported to destinations like America or Taiwan.
The catch of carp used as food (black carp) was in 1993 42 ton, while the amount of cultured
carp in Shobara reached 24 ton and it is mainly used in the Bihoku region.
