Rush (tatami covering)

Hiroshima's rush (tatami covering) is grown mainly from the eastern to the northern part of the prefecture around Fukuyama and has long been a special product of the region.
The raw material for tatami coverings made in this prefecture is high quality rush. The advanced manufacturing techniques turn this material in Japan's highest quality products, the so-called "Bingo-covering". This brand is sold throughout the country and highly valued.

<History of the Bingo coverings>

The manufacture of Bingo tatami coverings in Hiroshima started between 1532 - 57 when the people of Sanna village (present Numakuma town in Numakuma district) started to grow rush on rice paddies and weave it. In 1600 Shinemon Hasegawa used short rush, inventing other forms of coverings along the way, exerted himself for the mass production of tatami coverings. At that time the feudal lord of Hiroshima called Fukushima sent his retainers into neighboring regions in an attempt to spread the knowledge about and the technique of manufacture of these tatami coverings. Later, the feudal lords of Bingo Mizuno, Matsudaira and Abe designated the Bingo covering a regional special product of this region and promoted its protection. The quality control they exerted quickly led the use of this covering by the military government (Bakufu) in their places and mansions where it became the brand of choice and with the years became famous.
Today this production area is still Japan's No. 1 and retains not only its reputation, but also keeps its rank unchallenged.
