The "flower bed planting" performed by the "Saotome" (young girls) accompanied
by drums, singing and a lively "Hayashi" (group of drums and flutes providing
background music) is a traditional ethnic art of the northern prefectural regions.
Among these the "Mibu Flower bed planting" has been designated an important
immaterial cultural asset. The glittering decoration of the ox-carts, the appearance
of young girls wearing Kasuri dresses with bamboo hats and bright red cords for
holding the sleeves of the kimono and the mastered drum stick handling of the Hayashi
forms a magnificent picture against the fresh green of the mountains reflected in
the water of the rice fields. It almost reminds of a beautiful scroll display.
