Integration of the main events

1. Hiroshima - Asia sports competition

This sport event, for which 6800 athletes of 42 countries of the region gathered, was held in October 1994.
The first participation of Cambodia in 16 years and the first participation of 5 Near East countries including Uzbekistan made headlines and helped deepen the relationship between Hiroshima and Asia.

2. Hiroshima - Asia week

For a review of Hiroshima's role in Asia and to deepen the understanding of Asia this week was organized in 1990. During this week symposiums and arts and craft exhibitions, film festivals and sport friendship meetings were held and ethnic cooking classes organized. This week is held annually and every year a extensive program is prepared to widen the circle of mutual exchange.

Situation of the internationalization

1. Global trends and Hiroshima

Hiroshima Prefecture as a point of origin of peace promotes a proclamation of a complete nuclear arms ban and United Nations arms reduction talks are held here. In the future, Hiroshima is expected to actively develop international cooperation schemes and create a harmonic exchange with Asia and the world, all part of the so-called "created peace". For this purpose, Hiroshima will have to nuture (enrich) its power as a peace information source taking corresponding to its reputation and in concert with Japan's international cooperation plans.
Hiroshima proclamation of complete nuclear arms banishment: for the sake of international peace, Japan declares its adherence to the three non-nuclear principles and this prefectures adopted the proclamation on March 22, 1986.
United Nations Arms Reduction Conference: the United Nation arms reduction center is an international conference held for the purpose of initiating the international discussion and promote arms reduction negotiations (this conference has been held 7 times in Japan, 2 times in Hiroshima)

<Solidarity between Asia and pacific regions>

To realize changes in industrial structure and activation of the prefectural situation, it maintained not only close relationships, both geographically and historically, with North America and Europe right from the beginning, but also with areas showing a vigorous economic growth like ASEAN and NIES. The prefecture is now strongly expected to serve as a driving force for the world economy and as a "developmental pole" for the economic, social and cultural aspects of developments in Asia and the pacific regions.

2. Currents of regional internationalization

<From exchange to cooperation>

Even in rural areas not only friendly exchange, but also concrete cooperation to solve global environmental problems and schemes facilitating the contribution have been on the agenda. These topics constitute important pilars for the internationalization of rural areas.

<From administration to the private sector>

The prefecture wants to develop an international consciousness among the prefectural citizens. International cooperation on the rural self-governmental level, organization of bases for international exchange and similar topics are actively integrated an all levels and essential for internationalization projects respecting private efforts (prefectural citizens). That is why these activities need active support.

<Promotion of international cooperation>

The JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) international center functions as a base for the education of international personnel and is organized to cooperate with the Hiroshima International Cooperation Center (temporary name).
Also, medical care for the victims of the atomic bomb and environmental protection are other promoted characteristic cooperation projects of this prefecture. For an extension of the grass roots exchange and NGO activities the relevant organizations are trying to boost solidarity and support.

<Promotion of an organization of the basis for internationalization>

Preparation of airports, harbors, messe and convention facilities, international tourism and resort facilities aims at a promotion of attraction of related organizations. This also should strengthen Hiroshima's information providing and central base capacities.
In conjunction with the promotion of the internationalization personnel education, exchange and cooperation are performed by the relevant organizations. Simultaneously, efforts are made to support the building of a network. Gathering of information related to internationalization, beginning with the operation of foreign offices, and strengthening of information providing capabilities are also promoted.

<Promotion of multi purpose solidarity and exchange>

For an effective implementation of international cooperation schemes related to global issues, ODA funds are actively used. The country, JICA and United Nations related organizations cooperate to promote these projects. The multi purpose exchange should lead to the development of internationalization from Asia toward the world.
