Fukuyama is the "city of roses". The rose park symbolizes it. In spring and autumn
4,500 shrubs of 280 rose species blossom and provide the citizens with a place of
recreation.
The history of the "city of roses, Fukuyama" began in 1956. In one corner
of what had been called at that time the Minami park local citizen started planting
roses to "heal the wounds of war and restore the peace of mind of the people". Later,
roses were planted in during many procedures and in various regions and companies, so
that there are currently approximately 400,000 in the city. Now the city tries to become
the "city of a million roses". Every year in May the "Fukuyama rose festival" is held
centering around the rose park and roses have become a part of the life of Fukuyama's
citizens. Naturally, not only citizens, but also many people from within and without
the prefecture come visiting.
