Main Cities (Onomichi)

Meaning of the city symbol

The narrow upper part represents Mukaishima and the broader lower part Onomichi city, while the area in between symbolizes Onomichi water works.
Otherwise, a theory of the alternative name of the "Tama-no-Ura" relates the origin of this name to a symbolization of the rock balls of the Senko Temple, or else to the family crest of the Ashikaga family.

"Haru-urara"(bright spring) by Senji Maekawa

Onomichi is located approximately at the center of the Inland sea of Japan, southeast of Hiroshima. Topographically there is little flat area and city areas stretch in form of a belt along the coast. In recent years development of the mountains behind this coastline and reclaiming land from the sea led to a rapid growth of the city area.
Beside the three islands located within the city limits (Mukaishima, one third of its eastern part belongs to Onomichi city, Momoshima island and Kashima island it is a scattered city and includes also Urazaki town beyond Fukuyama city.
Beside the Fujii river running in east-west direction almost through the center of the city there are seven other second class rivers.

Slope

Onomichi, stretching narrowly in east-west direction is surrounded by mountains: Mt.Onomichi Suido in front and the three mountains Mt. Senkoji, Saikokuji and Jodoji behind it. A literally "tail" (the Japanese word "O" here means tail) like road has been developed running through its center. Centering around Mt. Senkoji the vertically and horizontally endless slopes and stone stairs speak of plenty of history and roman.

Onomichi Suido

The water channel Onomichi Suido runs narrowly in east-west direction and resembles a river. It is also called the "Ginza" of the sea where ferries shuttle it in several places and it bustles with the come and go of large freight ships and fisherboats returning home after work. A beautiful scenery when the setting sun paints the sea red.
