- Locations include stores, train stations, major highways and parks
- Marine public telephones
- Service to and from ships and ferries in Japan's coastal waters
- Automobile public telephones
- Service from long-distance buses and other vehicles
- Airplane public telephones
- Located in larger jet aircraft on domestic routes, usable at altitudes over 5,000 meters.
- New Digital Public Telephones
- This new type of public telephone uses the ISDN (integrated services digital network) and can connect to personal computers or faxes to allow computer communications or fax transmission.
- P (Pink) Telephone
- The "P-telephone" is similar to a public phone in that it accepts coins and is used by a wide variety of people. However, it is installed by owners of tea rooms and apartment buildings on their own telephone lines. Each caller pays for his or her own calls, as a convenience to the owner.
