The J-League (Japan Professional Soccer League), which started in 1993 with a countdown by approximately 60,000 people in the National Stadium, began with the support of fervent fans including those who had been soccer fans for some time. The unique actions of the players and the breathtaking top level play by foreign players instantly fascinated the spectators. Also, the enthusiastic cheering of the fans (called supporters) in the background made one believe that a new era had arrived in professional sport. Broadcasts of games were marked by high ratings, a wide range of J-League merchandising appeared, and many players appeared in commercials. It is likely that the importance placed on a close connection with a particular area, along the ideal of a European sports club, was one factor in this massive popularity.
