THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS
"Pilots probably think they are flying over a war zone." This is an extract from an article in the British Sunday Times at the time of the opening of the New Tokyo International Airport. Amid continuing strife from the anti-airport movement, New Tokyo International Airport (Narita Airport) opened in 1978 under the protection of 10,000 riot police. Ten years later, riding on the strong yen and the leisure boom, the airport was handling 10 million departing passengers per year. Also, the style of travel was changing from package tours such as "Jalpack" to individualized free travel.
