WEEKLY ASAHI
In June 1995 an ANA flight from Haneda to Hakodate is hijacked. The hijacker declares himself to be a member of Aum Shinrikyo and brandishes a bag of liquid, making passengers fearful of the possibility of sarin gas. Conditions inside the plane cannot be determined until a passenger makes a mobile telephone call from a lavatory, unseen by the hijacker. Having determined that the hijacker is not affiliated with Aum Shinrikyo, is acting alone, and has no plastic explosives, government forces their way into the plane at sunrise. The hijacker is arrested and all passengers are rescued. Everyone involved in the incident observes the significance of another angle of the multimedia era -- what it means to be the transmitter of information.
