THE MAINICHI NEWSPAPERS
After World War I, industrialization is accompanied by the establishment of city life. In 1916 the Labor Act establishes the 8-hour work day, altering the former custom of theaters open from dawn to sunset and factory shifts of 12 hours or longer. Workers now have leisure time. Leisure industries develop rapidly, and one of them is the moving picture. The popular moving pictures are even used for instruction in the use of the 'automatic telephone,' and patrons hear the narration provided by a talking performer.
