The Taisho area is a time when city life flowers. A new medium called radio captivates city dwellers, and rapidly becomes a part of popular life. These days, a university graduate hired by a first-rank corporation earns 80 yen per month, and at 125~245 yen a radio is a fairly costly item. The new medium is so little understood correctly that some veteran performers refuse to appear out of fear that their breath will be captured by the microphone and their lives shortened. Before long, lower-priced receivers appear and become a fixture in daily life. The most popular offerings are lectures, radio calisthenics, sports broadcasts and cooking programs.
