On November 1, 1989 directory assistance for numbers anywhere in Japan can be reached simply by dialing '104' without an area prefix. A nationwide electronic directory assistance system known as ANGEL is introduced, with the capability of searching for listings anywhere in Japan. Any requests for assistance for long-distance numbers from the '105' local directory assistance service is now automatically routed to '104.'
