Telephone subscribers have hitherto had no choice but to install the first phone unit (the main terminal) on a rental basis. This system is revised in April 1985 to allow users the freedom to select their own telephones. The era of the rented telephone is ended. In the new era, telephones will be bought from stores. The change is an opportunity for consumer electronics manufacturers to add telephones to their product lines, and a wide variety of phone models appear in response to customer demands.
