On March 1, 1959 "Marine Telephone" service is created, officially combining three existing systems, the port-based "harbor service," the "coastal service" serving routes through the Inland Sea, and the country's first shipboard public telephone service operated by Goto Shipping. The service operates using normal long-distance lines between intercity exchanges and base stations, plus microwave wireless communication between base stations and ships.
