The standardization of the directory inquiry service was achieved at the same time as the introduction of the automatic telephone exchange. The inquiry service had previously been provided by each local station's 500 number. This was changed to the single 100 number without an area code (the current number is 104), vastly improving the service. Also, the numbers for special services were changed so that a connection could be established by dialing three digits only, with no area code.
