How Telephone Numbers are Assigned

Telephone numbers function as names for individual people, companies and all sorts of services.
Each telephone number is made up of a zero (0) plus an area code, a local exchange number, and a subscriber number. The first (0) indicates a long distance call. The area codes used in Japan are assigned sequentially beginning from the north end of the country. The next part, the local exchange number, is assigned to a switchboard that is connected to household telephones. And the last four digits are the individual subscriber's number.
