The Morse Telegraph arrived in Japan in 1854 as a gift presented by Commander Matthew Perry to the Tokugawa military government. This was the 17th year after Morse had obtained the patent. It would be fifteen more years until the telegraph (telegram) service became practical in Japan in 1869. Telephone service began in 1890. At that time, switching was performed manually. Now, however, the NTT exchange (computer) connects calls instantaneously as soon as each number is dialed. |
Telegrams Telegrams written with a writing brush were delivered by runners. |
Now, beautifully designed telegrams are delivered by car on designated days. |
Telephone All telephone switching were performed manually. Service began with 155 telephones in Tokyo and 42 in Yokohama. |
Now, calls are connected by computer, as soon as each number is dialed. |
