The turning point in Japanese life after the war comes in the mid-fifties, as the Japanese calendar reaches the 'Showa Thirties.' The slogan of the times is "This is no longer the 'Postwar' Era." But there are few luxuries in the economic lives of most Japanese, who keenly feel that they are in the midst of the recovery. Everybody is working hard to be able to afford the highly desired 'Three Sacred Treasures,' a black-and-white TV, electric refrigerator and electric washing machine. This motivation to work will bear fruit in the form of a mass consumer society and amazing growth rates in the Japanese economy.
