Tokyo after the war lacks both food and living space. Telephone booths probably look like attractive housing to a number of people who simply move in. Some are even burned down by fires that are lit against the cold. Since materials and food are short, people turn steel helmets into cooking pots, get salt from sea water and make soap from rice bran and soda. Many head out to the farming districts as peddlers or make clothing from umbrellas. After defeat in the war, people in Japan do whatever they have to do to survive. This very energy will eventually build the country into an economic giant.
