At the end of the Meiji Era, Tokyo was ravaged by an economic depression. Nevertheless, the Imperial Theater and the Mitsukoshi Department Store were built, airships flew, new contraptions appeared one after another and people were amused. Because subscriber's telephones were not sufficient, the automatic telephone spread remarkably. A cartoon was drawn showing an expanded road filled with automatic telephones and police boxes.
