The first public telephone box near Kyobashi was painted white and was six-sided. It seems that the automatic telephone was the focus of attention for a variety of reasons. People thronged around the box to view a beautiful lady making a call and a female student with "a maroon hakama, braided long hair and stockings" which were in mode in those days, calling her friends. The telephone box was also popular as a shelter from rain.
