Telephone charges in the early days were paid annually and cost 40 yen in Tokyo and 35 yen in Yokohama. Business conditions around the 23rd and 24th year of the Meiji Period were very bad and a sho of rice(about 1.4kg) cost 7 to 8 sen, a cup of coffee one sen and five rin. Telephone charges were never cheap.
