Female operators made their debut with the telephone. It is said that nine "girls from educated, good backgrounds " aged between 14 and 25 were recruited on strict terms that they had no husband and no housework to do, and that they were able to "reckon" in daily life. Work for women in those days was limited to factory jobs or nursing. The appearance of young ladies going to work in rickshaws must have been a novel sight.
