With the telegraph,electricity began to be used on a large scale and the construction of telegraph networks paved the way for the "Electric Revolution". Also in America around the time of the Civil War (1861 to 1865), like in England, railroads were expanded and telegraph networks were enlarged. In 1866, a submarine telegraph line crossing the Atlantic was laid, as the first step towards global telegraph networks. The figure below shows Broadway around 1889. Densely stretched telegraph lines, which almost blocked out the sky even in the daytime, were the symbol of telegraphy utilization and prosperity of large cities.
