Users of vehicle-based mobile phone service, initiated in 1979, have issued strong demands for a telephone that can be used away from their vehicles. On September 18 1985, NTT responds with the 'Shoulder Phone,' an out-of-vehicle mobile telephone. This new type of phone has a transmitter and receiver, antenna and battery enabling it to communicate with the mobile terminal in the vehicle when used at a distance, allowing callers to use the phone while they are away from their cars.
