Telephone automation began in Tokyo and Yokohama in Taisho 15 (1926). Over a half century later, the telephones on Toshima in the Izu Islands, and on Kita Daito and Minami Daito islands in Okinawa, are the last to be converted, and Japan's phone system becomes 100% automatic.
