Telephone directories with numbers listed by business category appeared in 1951 (Showa 26). This meant that two different telephone directories were being published: the business telephone directory and the personal telephone directory. In 1959 (Showa 34), the name of the "Personal Telephone Number Directory" was changed to the "Gojyuon (Japanese equivalent of alphabetical order) Telephone Number Directory".
