The first long distance telephone service in Japan opened between Tokyo and Osaka on February 1st 1899 (Meiji 32). To use the long distance telephone service, the user paid a 6 yen per year additional fee and had to install a solid-back type telephone for long distance calls. Call charges were 1 yen 60 sen per call (5 minutes).
