Otabi Matsuri
Lovely children's kabuki is performed from festive float vehicles parading around the town.
Toshitsune Maeda, the retired lord of the Kaga clan who lived in Komatsu Castle, constructed the main buildings of Ubashi and Motori-Hiyoshi shrines. Mikoshi (portable replicas of the two shrines) were carried through the town to Komatsu Castle in commemoration of the completion of construction, and this was the origin of the Otabi Matsuri (travel festival). It is held for four days from May 13 and is often complemented by a breeze carrying the scent of green leaves. Eight hikiyamas (towed floats) are exhibited by different towns. The spectacle is very beautiful. Children perform kabuki balled dramas on two floats, and charming kodomojishi (children's dance with lion's masks) follow each mikoshi. Many tourists visit Komatsu to watch this performance every year.
