Edo had a spectacular fireworks display on the Sumida River. Everyone would shout in wonder when a beautiful burst exploded. Fireworks were invented in China and taken to Europe. During the reign of the Tokugawa Shogunate, an Englishman brought them to Japan. They were first seen by Ieyasu Tokugawa.
The most extravagant way to view the fireworks was to take a Yakata boat out on the river wearing a Yukata. It was the ideal way for people to forget the problems of everyday life.
