The "R96 (Rotterdam Festivals)" is going to be held in Rotterdam, Holland from September 16 to 29, in which a number of exhibitions, symposiums, concerts and performances will be held at various locations in the city. For the following two events, many media audience are expected to gather. ISEA (Inter-Society of Electronic Arts) This is a world-famous annual festival event for electronic arts, held at a different city each year since 1990. Originally, it began in Holland as an academic symposium under the name, "International Symposium of Electronic Arts". The main theme for this year is "Education as a Bridge between Art & Science", "Networked Art". A presentation of electronic art in Japan titled "JAPAN@ISEA96" ( Takuro Osaka, Yoichiro Kawaguchi, Naoko Tosa, Masaki Fujihata, etc.) is also scheduled. In the panel discussion, Toshiya Ueno will talk about "Japanimation and Techno-orientalism". DEAF(Dutch Electronic Art Festival) Three years have passed since V2_Organisatie, a highly-reputed organization for its experimental music and media art, moved to Rotterdam from Held Van Bosche. Since then the DEAF is held annually, and has been drawing increasing attention every year. This year's title is "Digital Territories". Among the arts and performances likely to draw much attention in the art festival, are new works by Knowbotic Research (Germany), KNOX (a group of experimental architecture in Holland), and works by Stacy Spiegel (Canada) displayed at the Harbor Simulator in the Maritime Museum (a virtual panorama of a 360-degree angle). The "Molecular Informatics Ver.2.0"(for two participants) by Seiko Mikami + ART LAB will also be exhibited. [Yukiko SHIKATA/Art Critic]
