In order to change this unsatisfactory condition, different suggestions were put forward since the end of the war. Besides the repeatedly produced recommendation to reconstruct the Palace in its baroque or classical style, many plans were presented for a modern building on the Palace square. Various kinds of uses were anticipated, like a Palace Hotel in 1951, or a health cure hotel with gambling casino in 1952, a museum in 1959, an university in 1960, a Look-out Terrace with restaurant in 1964, a terrace with planted trees in 1978, or a restaurant with conference rooms in 1990.

Two institutes of the University Hanover have put this problem under discussion again in a term paper. 24 students of the Architectural Department have taken part in this studies. The paper with the theme " Palace and Garden in Herrenhausen - History, Display, Planning" has been exhibited in the Kassenhalle ( Cashdesk Hall ) of the Northern German State Bank at Georgeplatz ( George Square ) from the 19th of June to the 10th of July 1996. From the point of view of the findings of architectural- and garden history, several plans and improvised drafts are presented. Large models, drawings and computer - animation illustrate three conditions of the Great Garden, namely the condition at the end of the Baroque period around 1760, the classical condition at the end of the Laves - time around 1850, and the present condition. These considerable efforts made for the exhibition make it possible to simulate all alternatives of the planning, to compare and to examine the respective spatial effect. Thus the models and animation could help make decision for the future's construction in the Great Garden.
