The Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross
Made for the coronation of Charles II in 1661, partially remodelled in 1910. 92.2 cm long, 1.17 kg, 333 diamonds, 31 rubies, 15 emeralds, 7 sapphires, 6 spinels, 1 amethyst. Sceptres belong to the central symbols of the royal power and royal authority. The Sovereign's Sceptre with Cross is placed in the sovereign's right hand during the coronation. Since its partial remodelling in 1910 the sceptre has contained the largest cut diamond in the world, the First Star of Africa, which weighs 530 carats. It was cut from the Cullinan Diamond that was found in South Africa in 1905. This uncut diamond weighed 3,106 carats (which is more than 600 grammes). This stone was a gift to Edward VII from the Transvaal Government.
