Headlines for August 16, 1995:

In a story first reported by the Associated Press, SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt, Jr. said that he is "absolutely committed" to keeping free Internet access alive after October 1. The SEC technical staff has already begun consultations with various groups about their options and a decision is expected this week on the details of access.

We'd like to congratulate Chairman Levitt, Commissioner Wallman, and the SEC MIS staff on taking this important step! The Patent Office has not yet responded to our letter, but we are hopeful that they will take similar steps in the very near future to preserve public access to their database.
