Kilmer copyright

This afternoon I spoke with the copyright office of the Library of Congress and with Carol Christiansen of Doubleday. In Ms. Christiansen's words, "Gates and Doors is definitely public domain." She confirmed the copyright office opinion that any work published more than 75 years ago is out of copyright, at least in the United States. (Canadian law for works before 1978 allows 50 years after the death of the author, and does not apply in this case.)

Since this is a situation that may recur, I thought I should clear up the legal issues now.
