current status of town
bullet bullet bullet bullet

here is the current status of town.hall.org as i know it.

- town's power supply, fan control unit and c0t3 (internal disk) have been replaced by sun tech support.

i have changed the default boot-device in PROM to use disk2 so that i could bring town up without c0t3. we can either leave it this way, or copy the / and /usr filesystems back to the new c0t3 disk and restore the PROM boot-device to disk3.

- town is up in a crippled state at the moment. what is up is working fine, but we have NO ODS volumes available, so /web, /ftp/radio, /in, and /in/congress are off-line.

i have disabled most of the services on the host until we can get the disk problems fixed. once the disk is ok again, the following files will need to be restored/renamed (currently named unused.original_name).

/etc/rc2.d/S95SUNWmd.sync

/etc/rc3.d/S98fair /S98harvest /S98httpd /S98realaudio /S98streamworks /S98cuseeme

i also disabled /usr/local/etc/httpd/cgi-bin/santa.pl to avoid the mail for santa being broken. i just added an exit 0 at the top of the script that can be removed when town is backup.

- disk /dev/dsk/c1t14d0 is toast and needs to be replaced. i believe this one bad disk is trashing all of the ODS metadevice programs currently as it effectively hangs the scsi bus. this disk is part of submirror 0 for /web.

disk layout should be the same as the other 4G quantums in the rack units.

i tried to recover the disk, but was unsuccessful.

- a number of files in the root filesystem were lost and will need to be restored from the last level 0 backup. david was in DC last week, so we have recent backups at least.

the files of interest are in /usr/share/lib/zoneinfo. you'll notice that the current date/time info on town is broken. this is because we lost the timezone info for EST5EDT, and others. just restoring the files in this directroy should be enough.

you should be able to replace the bad disk and bring town up completely after doing the format/partition on the drive.

the console is currently on trystero as i needed to be able to work while town was without power. suggest this be left alone for the time being. i will add a uva acct on trystero for now and give mike the passwd. you can call him to get it as needed at 703.461.1350. there is a console connection available from trystero via 'tip towncons'.

i will be out of town and unreachable from 14nov thru 17nov (evening). mike g. of uucom is available to work on this, so between david and mike town should be back on-line in a day or so. i have burned all of my UVA hours (and then some), so unless carl wants to give up some fair time, i'm done with town.

there should be no need to bring sun back in for this problem as it is not part of their supported equipment, but 800.USA.4SUN will get you to the tech support line. relevant info for town (ser# 417K0101) and mention that this is sun capital property on loan. should get a 4 hr turn-around.
