Brontes

The Bronte family produced some of the most durably popular novels of the 19th century, but theirs was hardly an overnight success and none of them lived long enough to achieve what many feel to be their true potential.

Emily, Charlotte, and Anne wrote verse and paid to have a book of their poetry published. It sold only two copies. Charlotte then wrote a novel, which was rejected so many times she quit trying. However, she then went on to write _Jane Eyre_, which was a spectacular success. Charlotte went on to become a literary figure of the day, meeting Thackeray and Matthew Arnold and others. She published two more novels, Shirley and Villette, before she died at the age of 39.

Emily, Charlotte's younger sister, wrote one novel, _Wuthering Heights_, before she died at the age of 30. The novel was acclaimed for its turbulent emotional landscape and mystical intensity and is recognized today as a classic.

Anne lived to be only 29 and although she published two novels, Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, but is chiefly remembered as the sister of Charlotte and Emily.
