"I shot this in Shiratani, in an area which is foggy at certain times of the day. This area has lots of moss, in particular, and it is very humid. Fumiko Hayashi, an author, wrote that "it rains 35 days a month here" from her novel "Ukigumo," [Floating Cloud]). In the mountains of Yakushima, precipitation is 10,000 millimeters a year. In Honshu, the main island of Japan, rainfall is heaviest on the Kii Peninsula, at 4,000 millimeters. So precipitation on Yakushima is more than double that. However, it is not so humid in all of Yakushima's forests. It changes from valley to valley."
