Relations between bap and kimchi
That we cannot eat bap (boiled rice) without kimchi also means
kimchi helps us to eat bap, the main diet of Korean people. Not
only it works as a good appetite stimulant, but actually the sour-salty
flavor and the lumpy feeling of kimchi help us to chew and eat
bap which mainly consists of carbohydrate.
It is ideal, too, to eat bap and kimchi together in terms of
nutrients. Human body needs to take in nutrients including vitamins
and minerals from fish and vegetables as well as the energy sources
like carbohydrate and protein from grains and meat. Unlike
carbohydrate and protein, it is not easy to eat a sufficient amount of
vegetables which are not much of energy source compared to
carbohydrate and protein. Especially with bap which is not
flavored with anything, it is hard to eat much raw vegetable. The
unique flavor and taste of kimchi help us to eat kimchi itself well, and
to eat bap as well. This helps us to have balanced meals. This is
why Korean people chose kimchi.
Kimchi is made not only as a preserved food for winter times when it
is hard to get vegetables, but also as a way of eating vegetables more
easily througout the rest of the seasons when fresh vegetables are
abundant.
