They are, as all us fans of sumo know, actually called beya. The term stable comes from the "ignorant gaijin". In America in the late 70's and early 80's, the Kronk boxing gym had something like three world champions (including Tommy Hearns). Howard Cosell mentioned that the "Kronk stable has a lot of strong young horses". The name stuck!
