Carex bicknellii in May
Carex bicknellii
Prairie Sedge

The genus Carex is one of the largest, and is well represented in all of the ecotypes in central North America. These plants are often mistaken for grasses. This particular species is most often encountered in dry, flat prairie remnants along old railroad rights-of-way. It produces its flowering head (pictured here) in mid May.
