Maclurites

Maclurites was widespread in North America. This fossil is contained to the Ordivician. The shell is characterized by a large outer whorl, with a strongly convex upper surface. The shell also exhibits growth lines, with pronounced revolving ridges in some species. This species is very abundant in rocks of Ordovician age, but is usually not well preserved. Many fossils are found when limestones and shales are cut open with saws, cutting the fossil in the process.
Pictured above are excellent samples of Maclurites that are almost completely intact.
