Yongdungp'o

Youido Plaza

  Youido Plaza is the largest plaza in Korea, with a length of 1,350 meters and an area of 378,001 square meters. It is located near the Korean Parliament building and the Korean National TV and radio network named KBS.
It can hold more than one million people at a time. The plaza is used for massive gatherings, such as national and religious events.
However, when there are no such events, the plaza is beloved by citizens of Seoul as a resting place, athletic field, children's playground and even as a dating spot.
One can go to the Han River by about 10 minutes walk from the plaza.

    Han-gang River Excursion Boat

      The excursion boat began its service on Oct.26, 1986 and goes up and down a 15 kilometer route between Youido and Chamshil.
    Like the cruise boats on the Seine of Paris, the excursion boat enables people to appreciate various attractions along the river, including the DLI 63 Building, while enjoying a cup of hot tea.

      KBS has four buildings : main building, annex building, new building and KBS Hall. KBS is a huge organization consisting of seven headquarters and networks : Broadcasting Operations Headquarters, News & Sports HQ., Television HQ., Radio HQ., Corporate Planning HQ., Engineering HQ., General Affairs & Finance HQ., Overseas KBS Bureau and Provincial Network.      Namsan Park is located at Mt. Namsan (256 m) in the heart of Seoul.
    It contains a variety of cultural and entertainment facilities, including an octagonal pavilion at the summit, the Seoul Tower, an aquarium, a fountain,

    Seoul Tower

      Seoul Tower, which stands on the top of Mt. Namsan, is the third highest tower (240m) in the world. It was completely built in 1975.
    Elevators run to the observation platform, located 480 meters above sea level at a speed of 4 meters a second. The view of Seoul seen from the 2nd and 3rd observation floors and the revolving observation platform on the 5th floor is especially excellent at night.
    On the first basement floor are a Korean restaurant, an aquarium, a marine life museum, Fancy World, a game room and a souvenir shop. Near the tower, an octagonal pavilion, a beacon, An Chung-kun Memorial, a botanical garden and a cable car can be found.

    Korea National Tourism Organization

      The Korea National Tourism Organization was established by a special government law to promote tourism in 1962. The KNTO building has 19 stories and four underground floors.
    It has six executive vice pre- sidents for Planning & Management, Marketing, Domestic Tourism Promo- tion, Business, Cheju Development and Special Projects.
    The KNTO is responsible for overseas promotion and publicity to attract foreign tourists.
    It also looks after activities related to developing tourism resources and assets and the training of tourism service personnel, especially foreign language tour guides.
    KNTO also promotes domestic tourism and publishes tourist information brochures.
    The Tourist Complaint Center (Tel: 735-0101) and Tourist Information Center (Tel: 757-0086), which are operated by KNTO, handles inconveniences experienced by tourists and provides tourist information and related services.

    Kyobo Book Center

      Established in 1981, the Kyobo book Center is located in the 5,100m*m basement of the Kyobo Bldg., and is the largest bookshop in Korea.
    It holds stocks, amounting to 150,000 varieties of one million five hundred thousands books including foreign publications (mainly in English and Japanese).
    Foreigners and Koreans visiting to Seoul typically drop into this center of intelligence and culture.

    Sejong Cultural Center

    Sejong Cultural Center is located near Kwanghwamun Gate in the heart of Seoul. It was built as the center of culture and art in honor of the sublime spirit of King Sejong of the Choson Dynasty and his great achievements.
    The six-story building has three underground levels and is composed of a main hall with a seating capacity of 3,895, an arena-style hall with a seating capacity of 522, a grand convention room with a seating capacity of 278, a small convention room with 50 seats, a banquet room, an exhibition room, the fountain plaza, and an underground parking lot.
    The center hosts various international events, arts performances and exhibitions.

    City Hall

    Seoul City Hall

      Seoul City Hall, at the center of the city, handles various administrative affairs of metropolitan Seoul. In front of it is a tourist map of the city as well as a fountain that characterizes the City Hall Plaza.
    City Hall is a three story building with one underground level. Built on an area of 12,232 square meters during the Japanese occupation of Korea,
    it was dedicated in January, 1926. A general information center is located on the second floor of the City Hall.

    King Sejong Memorial Hall

      This hall was established in memory of King Sejong's great achieve- ments. Located next to Yonghwiwon, the two-story building holds four display rooms dedicated to King Sejong, Han-gul (the Korean alphabet), Kugak (traditional Korean music) and scientific accomplishments, respectively.
    The room which is dedicated to King Sejong is displaying 15 paintings, including a portrait of the King. The paintings depict the King's various achievements, such as the promulgation of Han-gul, the conquest of Japanese territory, and Ch'uk-ugi, a rainfall gauge, one of the scien- tific instruments devised during his reign.
    In the Han-gul Room, various scripts and books published in Han-gul during his rule are on display.
    In the Kugak Room, Korean musical instruments such as Kayagum (12-stringed zither), Komungo (six-stringed zither), P'yon -gyong (stone chimes), P'yonjong (bell chimes) and others are on display.
    A sundial, a rainfall gauge and many others are shown in the Science Room. In the front yard, a stele commemorating King Sejong, water gauge, sundial and waterclock can be found.
