The few early Showa-style telephone boxes to survive the fires are joined on the still charred city streets by a new prefabricated barracks-style postwar telephone box. Cream-colored on the outside and a light blue-green inside, the new booths have upper and lower windows to deter theft. But before long, the original neat appearance becomes irregular as broken glass cannot be repaired fast enough, and windows are blocked up or covered over with warning notices.
