Only 250 public telephones remain among the burned-out ruins of Tokyo, and only 29 of these are fully operational. Out of necessity, 'Special Telephone Sites' are devised. Consisting of tables set up outside train stations or guard posts, these open-air public telephones are staffed by female operators in traditional 'monpe' pants. Naturally, this phone service is a hit with the users who are living a barracks life. On rainy days, however, service shuts down.
